Ajax vs Dynamo Kiev: A classic matchup of offence vs defence

The game at the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam is set to kick off tomorrow night at 21:00 CET.

Dynamo Kiev has not lost a competitive match (official or friendly) since May, winning twelve and drawing three of their last fifteen encounters. In the midst of those is a Super Cup victory over Shakhtar Donetsk and four wins to open the new domestic league campaign. Furthermore, the Ukrainian side has only conceded one single goal (at Slavia Prague) in their last seven games. Safe to say, Alyaksandr Khatskevich’s squad is a very well organised one.

If anyone can break them down, Ajax can. Erik ten Hag’s team oozes talent at every position and appears poised to end a streak of four years without a domestic title and without Champions League football. They haven’t been as impressive as their Ukrainian rivals to start the season, but have the offensive firepower to beat them. Their last time out in the Europa League a week ago, Ajax dominated Standard Liege at home, defeating the Belgian side 3-0.

Player to watch: Viktor Tsygankov

The 20-year-old Viktor Tsygankov assisted on both Dynamo Kiev goals versus Slavia Prague and then scored the only goal in his team’s 1-0 win against Oleksandriya over the weekend. He’s Dynamo’s main source of attacking creativity and the main threat to Ajax’s goal.

Ajax 8/13

Draw 29/10

Dynamo Kiev 17/4

Dynamo Kiev’s main objective will be to secure an active result heading into next week’s second leg. Scoring an away goal would be ideal, but keeping a clean sheet will be the main objective. Therefore, expect them to rely on counter-attacks, where players like the above-mentioned Tsygankov and Slovenian international Benjamin Verbic will be relied upon for exactly that. Free kicks and set pieces are other areas the guests will try to exploit.

Ajax vs Dynamo Kiev Injury News

While Dynamo Kiev are at full strength, ten Hag won’t be able to count on centre-back Joel Veltman and young Danish striker Kasper Dolberg, whereas David Neres is nursing a muscle injury and is questionable to play.
