Ajax make Bergwijn a record transfer

Ajax Amsterdam have dug deep into their pockets and made the king’s transfer perfect: Steven Bergwijn will be responsible for the future of the Dutch record champions.

In January, a transfer fell through, but now Ajax has announced the completion of the deal. Bergwijn leaves Tottenham Hotspur and signs a contract until 2027 in the Dutch capital. A costly purchase. According to the club, the base transfer fee amounts to 31.25 million euros and is likely to rise further due to bonuses. The 24-year-old thus replaces Sebastien Haller (22.5 million euros) as Ajax’s most expensive transfer.

“It is indicative of Steven’s ambition that he has decided to make the move to Ajax. He is a player with many qualities,” Ajax coach Alfred Schreuder praised the newcomer. “He has a tremendous drive and is also very determined. “

Competition too strong – circle closes

The Dutch international thus ends the England chapter for the time being after moving to London from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020.

In the attacking department, however, the right-footer, who is mainly based on the left wing, could not sustainably assert himself against Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and Co. With the arrival of Richarlison, Bergwijn’s playing time would have been significantly reduced. In total, he made 83 appearances for Spurs, during which he only scored 18 points.

Now Bergwijn is moving back to the city of his birth. And a circle closes. He already played in the youth teams of Ajax between 2005 and 2011 – and in future for the professionals for the first time.
