On March 18, 2025, Ajax Amsterdam will celebrate its 125th anniversary. In honor of the occasion, the Dutch record champions will return to their old logo.
The old Ajax Amsterdam crest was replaced 34 years ago with a more modern design, but the supporters never really warmed to it. At least that’s what managing director Menno Geelen said in a club statement: “We know that most of our fans have had this wish for years, and we felt that our 125th anniversary was the perfect moment to give our fans and ourselves back the classic logo.” Furthermore, history has shown “that we are at our best when we stay true to the Ajax DNA. That’s why we do everything within the club to maintain that DNA, from our football philosophy to our core values. The reintroduction of the classic logo symbolizes this commitment.”
From 1928 to 1990, Ajax had worn the now-returned emblem on its chest, and the club won the European Champion Clubs’ Cup three times during that time.
The shape of the new emblem remains the same, but the red border is now black. The figure in the middle is drawn in much more detail; previously, it was only composed of a few lines and no contours. On the right, a smaller emblem in the club colors of red and white has been integrated. The lettering with the city name Amsterdam is no longer present.
Final changeover only for the new season
The logo will not be officially introduced until the 2025/26 season, when it will also appear on the team’s jerseys. “From that point on, the logo will be gradually applied to all of the club’s communications,” Ajax explained. However, the return of the classic logo will be celebrated in advance this Sunday in the Amsterdam Arena when the Ajax Legends meet the Real Madrid Legends.
