Sporting Lisbon, opponents of Borussia Dortmund in less than a week’s time, are one round further in the Portuguese Cup thanks to Pedro Goncalves.
In the Champions League, Sporting could push the door wide open for the last 16 with a win against BVB next Wednesday in the domestic cup, the Lisbon side have already been through to the last 16 since Thursday night.
Pedro Goncalves, who played a key role in the two victories over Besiktas in the top flight (4-1 and 4-0) with two goals and two assists, also scored decisively in the cup against second division side SC Varzim.
After a goalless first half, Paulinho’s 67th-minute hack was blocked and Goncalves dusted the ball into the empty net from close range. But the underdogs fought back and equalised eleven minutes later with a penalty converted by Heliardo. Goncalves also scored from the spot two minutes before the end of normal time to prevent extra time against Varzim
