Manchester City is working on the arrival of Virgil van Dijk. According to The Telegraph, the leader of England is approaching an agreement with Southampton for an amount of approximately 68 million euros. Attracting Van Dijk has become a top priority in the Etihad Stadium for the winter transfer period, while Southampton is willing to cooperate with a transfer.
Besides Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Barcelona are also associated with Van Dijk. Nevertheless, the citizens are increasingly confident that the sixteen-fold Dutch national Orange comes to Manchester. Because of the ongoing injury problems of Vincent Kompany and the recent hamstring injury of John Stones, Josep Guardiola wants to add at least one centrum defender to the selection.
When Van Dijk comes, The Telegraph writes, he doesn’t have to immediately count on a base place. The former player of FC Groningen, among others, would be won as an alternative to the central duo Stones and Nicolás Otamendi. However, Guardiola sees Van Dijk as an important long-term asset. There is a chance that Van Dijk has already played his last match for Southampton, because he didn’t get into action during the last two games.
In the last league match, at home against Huddersfield Town (1-1), the mandekker did not even belong to the selection. Although his contract with St Mary’s will last until mid-2022, Southampton now wants to participate in a transition, unlike last summer. In the summer, Liverpool visited Van Dijk for weeks on end, who submitted a transfer request and refused to train. He stayed with the club and joined the selection later. By the way, with a transfer sum of 68 million euros, Van Dijk would become the most expensive Dutchman ever.
