Against number 259: Struff fails

The German continues his negative trend. The Warsteiner is also disappointing in the Principality.

Tennis pro Jan-Lennard Struff has suffered his next setback and has also been eliminated in the first round at the ATP Masters in Monte Carlo. On Sunday, the 34-year-old lost 2-6, 1-6 to local hero and world number 259 Valentin Vacherot after a weak performance.

Warsteiner Struff had previously already failed at the first hurdle at the Masters tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami.

In Monaco, only Australian Open finalist Alexander Zverev and Daniel Altmaier are still in the tournament from a German perspective. Tokyo Olympic champion Zverev, who is currently struggling to find form, is the number one seed in the principality and received a bye for the first round. Altmaier made it into the main draw via qualification.

Struff started weakly into the duel, after only 25 minutes the first set went to his opponent. Even in the second round, the German did not find his way into the encounter, after a double fault Vacherot grabbed the quick break to 0:2. After only 58 minutes, Struff’s sixth consecutive defeat was sealed.
