After the derby scandal: Atletico stands closed

Atletico Madrid not only has to pay a fine after the riots at the Derbi madrileno, but also has to close the stands.

The sporting aspect took a back seat in the derby against Real Madrid (1:1) last Sunday evening. The atmosphere in the Civitas Metropolitano deteriorated to such an extent that the disciplinary committee of the Spanish football association RFEF had to intervene.

As a result, Atletico Madrid will have to close part of its grandstands after the riots. The suspension applies to the next three home games and mainly affects the “Fondo Sur”, from where supporters had thrown objects onto the pitch. Atletico will also have to pay a 45,000 euro fine.

The incidents occurred after Real took the lead in the 64th minute. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, formerly of Atletico, had turned triumphantly to the home supporters. They threw objects at him, including cigarette lighters. Courtois was not hit, but the game was suspended for about 15 minutes.

As Atletico announced on Monday, one person has been identified and punished with a lifelong stadium ban.
