First, striker legend Ronaldo had declared his candidacy for the post of president of the Brazilian Football Association (CBF), but then recently withdrew it – the way was once again clear for Ednaldo Rodrigues.
Shortly before Christmas, Ronaldo caused a stir when he threw his hat into the ring with a view to the office of CBF president. The last time there was a rival candidate in an election for CBF president was in 1989. But two weeks ago, Ronaldo announced that he would not be running after all.
In a “first contact with 27 national associations”, he “encountered 23 closed doors”, the 2002 world champion had written on Instagram. According to the statutes, the votes of the CBF branches have a higher weight than those of the 40 first and second division clubs, so they can single-handedly choose a president.
In office until 2030
And his name is Ednaldo Rodrigues, who has been at the helm of the association since March 2022 and will now remain in office until 2030. The 71-year-old celebrates his re-election as a “triumph of democracy”. Rodrigues can count on the full support of the 27 regional associations and the 40 clubs in the top two leagues, the association said in a statement.
