Corona’s Boxing Day is a bit slimmer this year. Three games have been cancelled, but not Aston Villa’s home game against Chelsea FC. The Villans will, however, have to do without coach Steven Gerrard.
As the league’s tenth-placed side announced on Saturday, Gerrard has tested positive for COVID-19 and will therefore definitely miss Aston Villa’s game against Chelsea (6.30pm) on Sunday and also at Leeds United on Tuesday. However, it is uncertain whether the Leeds game will be able to take place at all.
Following a Corona outburst within the team, Leeds had already asked the Premier League to postpone the game at Liverpool FC scheduled for Boxing Day. The league “regrettably” complied with the request. Whether enough players will report back in time for the Villa match?
Great Corona worries in England
The Premier League is currently plagued by numerous Corona worries, with only four of ten matches played last weekend – including Aston Villa, who were unable to play their match against Burnley. In total, the Premier League already has to find make-up dates for 13 matches.
The finding is a setback for the 41-year-old, who had led the seven-time English champions to tenth place with four wins from six games since taking over in November – the former international only suffered defeats against top teams Manchester City (1:2) and his former club FC Liverpool (0:1).
