After patellar tendon rupture: Ter Stegen joins goalkeeper training

In September, national goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen suffered a serious injury. Now the 32-year-old can take further steps towards his comeback.

Positive news for Marc-André ter Stegen: The German national team goalkeeper took part in FC Barcelona’s joint goalkeeper training session again for the first time on Monday. “Back to work with the other goalkeepers,” he wrote on X, thus coming a step closer to returning to the pitch.

However, it remains questionable whether he will be fit to play again this season. Ter Stegen has been out since mid-September with a patellar tendon rupture in his right knee. It was not until mid-February that the 32-year-old was able to resume individual training sessions with the Catalans.

National coach supports ter Stegen

The DFB squad also had to do without the goalkeeper. His replacement Oliver Baumann has been doing well in the German goal recently, but national coach Julian Nagelsmann has backed ter Stegen. “When he’s 100% fit, he’ll be the number one. He deserves to play in a major tournament. We’ll give him the time,” said Nagelsmann.

Szczesny as replacement in Barca goal

Hansi Flick’s team also had to replace their former Gladbach player. Initially, this task was entrusted to the second choice, Inaki Pena. Due to the long period of absence, Barcelona nevertheless decided to become active on the transfer market again and signed the club-less Wojciech Szczesny. Although the Pole initially had to take a back seat to Pena, he went on to become the Catalans’ mainstay between the posts. Barca are now even considering extending the veteran’s contract beyond the summer.
