On the pitch the winner was Granada, but at the green table outsiders Arosa progressed in the Copa del Rey. The first division team fielded a player who should not have played
Granada FC won 3:0 in the first round of the Copa del Rey at lower-league Arosa SC (5th division “Tercera División”) in Galicia. José Callejon, Shon Weissman and Famara Diedhiou were the goalscorers for the Andalusians, who seemingly lived up to their role as favorites.
Granada will still not be in the second round. This was decided by the Spanish FA RFEF on Tuesday. The reason for the first division club’s exclusion: Goalkeeper Adri Lopez was a player who was not eligible to play.
The 24-year-old is simply too old, as players from the second team are only allowed to play in the first team up to the age of 23 in cup competitions (Copa del Rey, Spanish Supercopa) following an amendment to the law last January.
Arosa advance to the 2nd round
The association waved through Arosa’s protest, which means that as things stand – Granada have ten days to lodge an appeal – they are one of the 56 clubs who will compete in the second round of the cup. First division returnees Granada can now concentrate on the relegation battle. The Andalusians are currently second-last in La Liga with just six points after a 1-0 defeat at Valencia, their third defeat in a row. FC Getafe visit the Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes on Saturday evening (6.30pm).
Meanwhile, the second round of the Copa del Rey will be drawn on November 15 – without Granada in the draw
