After less than three months: Huddersfield part ways with Breitenreiter

After less than three months, André Breitenreiter’s adventure in England is over for the time being. The German coach agreed to part ways with Huddersfield Town following their relegation to the 3rd division

When André Breitenreiter took over as coach of Huddersfield Town on February 19, 2024, the club was in 20th place in the second-tier Championship and five points clear of the relegation places. The German coach arrived with a “great desire to stabilize and develop the club”. Less than three months later, the project failed.

With the Terriers, who still played in the Premier League in 2017/18 and 2018/19, the 50-year-old experienced an end-of-season spurt to forget. Only two wins in 13 games, the points were shared five times and six games were lost

Drop to penultimate place and relegation

Since the competition scored significantly better in the final phase, Huddersfield slipped into the relegation zone and ended the season in 23rd place in the table, six points and 18 goals behind the drop zone. The club must therefore return to the 3rd division for the first time since 2012 – and will do so without Breitenreiter.

Huddersfield Town announced on Friday afternoon that they had mutually agreed to terminate the original two-and-a-half-year contract in “positive talks”. “I have enjoyed the opportunity to work with André over the last three months and he leaves with our best wishes,” said Kevin Nagle, owner and chairman of Huddersfield Town, bidding farewell to the coach.

Succession not yet decided

A successor to Breitenreiter has not yet been decided, but Nagle assured that the process is already “at an advanced stage”. “Fans can be assured that any decisions made will be made with the best intentions of our club in mind and we look forward to moving forward positively with a new head coach who fits our ideals and vision,” he looked ahead.

For Breitenreiter, the brief interlude in England was the second foreign experience of his coaching career after his stint at FC Zurich, with whom he became champions in Switzerland in the 2021/22 season. In Germany, the coach has previously been in charge of TSV Havelse (2011-2013), SC Paderborn (2013-2015), Schalke 04 (2015-2016), Hannover 96 (2017-2019) and TSG Hoffenheim (2022-2023)
