Four league games, three points: AS Roma’s start to the season has not matched the ambitions at the club. The owners around US billionaire Dan Friedkin therefore reacted early and relieved coach Daniele de Rossi (41) of his duties on Wednesday morning. It was only in June that the club’s iconic coach was given an early extension until 2027.
The coach had taken over from José Mourinho at the start of the year, brought the Giallorossi back to winning ways with refreshing attacking soccer and only narrowly missed out on the Champions League in the end.
“In his short tenure as head coach, the positive impact his leadership has had on the club as a whole has written its own history,” said the US management team in April. “We couldn’t be happier to build a long-term project with Daniele. “
De Rossi would have missed the next game anyway
Now, less than six months later, the magic has worn off. The club’s decision was made “in the best interests of the team”, AS wrote on its website on Wednesday. The aim was to return “to the desired path” as quickly as possible, as the season was still in its early stages. De Rossi will “always be at home” at the club, it continued, garnished with a “heartfelt thank you”. Nothing has been announced about his successor for the time being
On Sunday, the Giallorossi drew 1-1 at CFC Genoa and missed out on their first win of the season at the fourth attempt. Because de Rossi was shown a yellow card for complaining in the closing stages, he would have been suspended for the upcoming game against Udine on Sunday (6pm) anyway.
Last-minute addition Mats Hummels watched the action on the bench for 90 minutes. He will now make his debut in a Roma shirt under a new coach.
