After a record season: players are getting out of WNBA contract

After a record season in the professional basketball league WNBA, the players’ union will prematurely withdraw from the collective agreement with the league. The Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) announced the move the day after New York Liberty won the title with German duo Leonie Fiebich and Nyara Sabally.

The agreement, which was originally scheduled to run until the 2027 season, will now end at the end of October 2025. The upcoming talks will focus on how the new funds can be distributed among the players and teams. The union had until November 1 to withdraw from the current agreement.

“After the historic 2024 WNBA season, we look forward to working with the players and the WNBPA on a new contract that is fair for everyone and lays the foundation for growth and success in the years to come,” said league chief Cathy Engelbert.

The WNBA has had a season full of records in terms of attendance, sponsorship, TV ratings and revenue. This includes a new 200 million dollar rights agreement for the next eleven years with NBC, Disney and Amazon Prime.
