Adeyemi’s recipe for success: “It’s all about self-confidence for me”

After a mixed start to the season, September could hardly have gone better for Karim Adeyemi. He has confirmed his form from the U21s in a Borussia Dortmund kit

“I wanted to train and play better in Dortmund,” said Karim Adeyemi ten days ago, looking back and explaining his decision not to take part in the U-21 training course last November. After his experiences over the past few days, he is unlikely to give such a reason again. After all, his call-up to the U-21s obviously also helped him at the club.

Adeyemi transferred the confidence he gained from scoring five goals against Israel (5:1) and Estonia (10:1) to the Bundesliga. The 22-year-old, through whose left flank numerous Dortmund attacks ran, shone in his first match after the international break with an assist and two goals. “I’ve taken confidence with me from the U21s, which has helped me a lot. The coach trusted me today and I showed him that I’m there,”

However, he was not entirely satisfied with his performance. He wanted to score a treble, as he did on Tuesday in Tallinn. “I was hoping to score a third goal,” explained the attacking player. The “big” chance to do so came in the 59th minute, as Heidenheim coach Frank Schmidt also noted. But in a promising position, the attacking player tried to set up Serhou Guirassy for his debut goal instead of finishing it himself

Adeyemi hopes to be called up for the senior national team

The decision to cross the ball was certainly not due to a lack of confidence. “I don’t need to hide. I gained a lot of self-confidence in the U21s. It’s all about self-confidence for me,” explained the left-footer.

If Adeyemi maintains this confidence, he could soon be back in Julian Nagelsmann’s sights. Asked about a possible nomination for the senior national team next month, the attacking player replied: “We say Inshallah. Hopefully, hopefully that means.” If not, he still has the U21s to look forward to after his recent performances
