“A special situation”: Freiburg’s anticipation for the top match in Munich

First against third: Bayern against Freiburg. That’s right, Freiburg! After the 3:1 victory over last-place Fürth, the leaders await the Sport-Club next Saturday. In the Breisgau, they like their new role.

Jochen Saier had to speak louder in order not to be completely drowned out by the raging fans in the post-match interview. While the sporting director was raving about the “great atmosphere”, the team was celebrating the first victory in the new stadium with the fans. The final score was 3:1 against Greuther Fürth. “A “work victory”, as the 43-year-old described it on Sky. “We controlled the game with all clarity. In the phase where we did a little less, Fürth was dangerous and consequently scored the goal. But we come right back again. Those are exactly the games you have to win then. “

Best score set – will the new record follow in Munich?

Lose? They don’t even know that in Breisgau anymore. The Sport-Club is unbeaten in ten games in a row and has thus set its own club record – as it did in 2012 and 2001. Only one game is still missing to become the sole record, and now, of all times, the club travels to FC Bayern next Saturday. But in the constellation as the third-placed team in the table and the only unbeaten team in the league, SC Freiburg will not be travelling to the record champions as the glaring underdogs for once.

SC have certainly played better football this season than against the promoted team, but coach Christian Streich had already reckoned that his team would have a tougher time after the thrilling cup fight last week. “We had to go brutally to the edge in the cup in Osnabrück. We had to see who could play first. Normally I wouldn’t be satisfied with the football. But I knew what was coming. It was not easy for our team,” the 56-year-old summed up. But at the end of the day, the hosts were on the spot in the decisive moments. That will also be the most important premise in seven days’ time.

“We are ready” for Bayern

“We are ready,” Saier sent a small message of fight towards Munich, albeit with a smirk on his face. “We are looking forward to it. It’s a special situation, of course. To travel to Munich and to be able to play a top game there; and not only because it’s Bayern, but also because it’s us. That makes us extremely happy. Then we’ll go all out and see how far our feet take us,” continued the sporting director.

“After a win like that, of course you’re totally euphoric,” Nicolas Höfler, scorer of the 2:0 goal, told us, before at least trying to keep the ecstasy in the stands in check:  “We know where we’re going.” By this time, however, the party in the new arena was already in full swing and the team’s mission was clearly formulated: “Take Bayern’s lederhosen off!
