A new start where it all began: Morey returns to Spain

The emotional farewell from Dortmund is followed by an emotional next stop: Mateu Morey returns to his birthplace and will play for training club RCD Mallorca again in future

In the summer of 2015, a certain Mateu Morey set off to conquer the world of soccer. Nine years later, the Palma de Mallorca-born and trained defender returns to the vacation island. Due to constant injury worries, the 24-year-old had previously been denied an even greater career.

Morey moved from Mallorca’s youth ranks to FC Barcelona’s U18s in July 2015 and four years later joined Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer, who saw promise for the future in the lively right-back. Various knee injuries, one to his shoulder and many minor ailments ultimately meant that he made just 32 competitive appearances for BVB’s professional squad. He made 21 in the Bundesliga, seven in the Champions League and four in the DFB Cup.

Now Morey is daring to take a step back in order to move forward again. At just 1.73 meters tall, the Spaniard is the first summer signing from RCD Mallorca, who finished 15th in the La Liga last season. If Morey is able to earn a place in Jagoba Arrasate’s team, a highlight awaits right from the start. In their very first home game, which would be Morey’s first ever La Liga appearance, champions Real Madrid visit Mallorca

Special contract model

The contract model shows that Mallorca also want to wait and see how Morey’s battered body reacts to regular exertion. The Mallorcans have signed the returnee for just one season – albeit with a mutual option to extend for a further two seasons.

Morey, who has won the DFB Cup and the U-17 European Championship so far in his career, will start training on Mallorca next Monday. He should not have any acclimatization problems
