SC Freiburg were unbeaten at home for nine games in a row. Eintracht Frankfurt put an end to this series and won their second away game in a row with 2:0 – thanks to a stable defence and a portion of fortune in the decisive scenes.
Freiburg coach Christian Streich started with an unchanged starting eleven compared to the 1:2 in Munich.
Eintracht coach Oliver Glasner made changes in two positions after the 2-1 last-minute win in Fürth. Hinteregger, who had to pull out at short notice due to a knock in training, was replaced by Hasebe in the centre of defence and Chandler replaced Durm on the right.
Similar game idea, even start
With a lot of tempo, a move to the goal, early running against the ball and similar basic tactical formations, both teams went into the match with comparable game ideas. As a result, no one really came to the fore in the first few minutes. Borré had the first shot from an acute angle (11th), but Höler had the better chance, but his shot was saved by Trapp (19th). The keeper was also on hand to deal with a dangerous cross from Grifo (24th).
Two goals – twice luck was involved
After a largely even 30 minutes, Eintracht made the difference in front of goal – also thanks to a portion of luck. After winning the ball in midfield, Lindström initiated a promising counterattack, Jakic, who was running along, had the ball picked off his foot by Kübler, but the ball rolled right into the path of Lindström, who kept his cool in front of goal and scored his first Bundesliga goal (34th).
When Freiburg were still in the process of shaking off the frustration of conceding a goal, Kostic added another. A free kick from half field, which was actually intended as a cross, fell in front of Flekken, who expected another player to get close and therefore stayed in his goal – but without anyone touching the ball, it tapped in and landed in the top left corner (43.).
First the post saves, then Tuta on the line
The second half began with a real storm and stress phase for both teams. Luck continued to be on Eintracht’s side when a powerful header from Höfler hit the post (51st). Shortly afterwards, it was Tuta who cleared a volley from Grifo behind the already beaten Trapp on the line (56.). But Eintracht also had their chances in this phase. While Lindström tested Flekken with a shot from 16 metres (57th), Kamda missed from a good position one minute later.
After these turbulent minutes, the game calmed down again. Thanks to a combative performance and a stable and cool defence, nothing more burned in front of Eintracht’s goal. Freiburg continued to run into the final minutes, but there were no chances worth mentioning.
Record missed
The third-placed team in the table missed out on setting a club record. SC have gone unbeaten in nine straight home games since a 3-0 defeat to Leipzig in March. However, a tenth game, as was the case from January to September 2012, was not added – instead, the Breisgauer left the new stadium empty-handed for the first time.
