Sports Minister Faeser: “Anyone who loves football is against a Super League”.

The oral hearing before the European Court of Justice (ECJ) on the establishment of a Super League started on Monday afternoon. Sports Minister Nancy Faeser takes a clear position against a new competition that would then only include top clubs.

“A Super League as a closed circle of the richest clubs completely contradicts the spirit of sport. I am a big fan of open sporting competition, where surprise teams also have a chance and sporting performance counts. “Even the success of the top clubs in football depends on social acceptance. Sport can unite, especially in difficult times. Sport must not divide. Those who completely disconnect lose the fans, the passion and the support,” Faeser added.

Faeser is in “close contact” with the DFB

The ECJ has been dealing with the lawsuit of the “European Super League Company” against UEFA and FIFA, which was filed at a court in Madrid, in an oral hearing since today. A legal representative of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK), which is responsible for ECJ issues, will also attend the hearing in Luxembourg and submit a statement, which has been coordinated with the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

“Anyone who loves football is against a Super League. It’s not solidarity when clubs say goodbye to open competitions and become increasingly greedy, aiming only for the really big money. I have a clear position on this. I am in close contact with the German Football Association,” emphasised Minister Faeser.
