The 33-year-old said on several occasions on Wednesday. “I’m happy retiring,” the Englishman let it be known in a video via Twitter, “and it’s going to cost people half a billion to get me out of retirement.”
Just the night before, Fury himself had talked up a comeback in an interview on his promoter’s YouTube channel. In the event that world champion Alexander Usyk wins the rematch against Fury’s dethroned compatriot Anthony Joshua, he said a unification fight was conceivable: The Ukrainian holds the belts of the WBA, WBO and IBF federations.
Speaking on English radio talkSport on Wednesday, Fury then clarified again: “What you have to do is raise half a billion. Five hundred million pounds or dollars, I don’t care as long as it’s half a billion.”
He does not trust Joshua to win against Usyk in the rematch either. So with a comeback, Fury says he would also save the honour of British boxing: “If AJ gets beaten again, then there’s only one man left who can redeem this great fighting nation, and his name is Tyson Fury. I can solve all the problems, I’m just a phone call away. But it costs half a billion.”
In April, Fury had successfully defended his WBC belt against Dillian Whyte in front of 94,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.
