German Wimbledon finalist celebrates comeback

Nine years ago, Sabine Lisicki thrilled German tennis fans at Wimbledon. But she could not stay at this level, also due to injuries. Most recently she was absent for a long time – but is now returning.

After a one-and-a-half year forced break, former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki has celebrated her comeback. The 32-year-old, who ruptured her cruciate ligament in November 2020, won her opening match in the ITF tournament qualifier in Bonita Springs, USA, 6-3, 6-4 against Japan’s Ena Shibahara.

In 2013 Lisicki had reached the final at the All England Club, and in 2014 she celebrated the last of her four tournament victories in Hong Kong. Due to numerous injuries and an illness with Pfeiffer’s glandular fever, she never found her way back to the top of the world. She is currently not listed in the WTA world rankings.
