Bayern, PSG and Salzburg are already champions, but there is still plenty of action in other top leagues. The situation in Europe.
Germany: Bayern complete the decade
There has been no suspense in Germany for a long time: Bayern made their tenth championship in a row perfect with their 3-1 win over BVB last Saturday. With three matchdays to go, “chaser” Dortmund is a whopping twelve points behind the new old German champions.
England: High Voltage to the End?
A completely different story in England, where a heart-stopping final is looming: Manchester City (80 points) and Liverpool (79) are engaged in a thrilling neck-and-neck race that may only be decided on the very last matchday. ManCity still have to face Leeds (A), Newcastle (H), West Ham (A) and Aston Villa (H). The Reds will face Newcastle (A), Tottenham (H), Aston Villa (A) and Wolverhampton (H).
Spain: Real on the verge of coronation
Real Madrid, who produced a spectacle with Manchester City in the Champions League, are close to their 35th national championship in Spain. The royals currently have a 15-point lead over “chaser” Barça, meaning Real can wrap up their next title as early as Saturday’s home game against Espanyol.
Italy: Will Milan or Inter do it?
Similarly exciting as in England is the situation in Italy, where the heavyweights from Milan dominate: Milan (34 games/74 points) are currently close ahead of Inter (33/72), who can, however, trump the Rossoneri with a game to spare. Will it remain dramatic until the end? Milan still have to face Florence (H), Verona (A), Atalanta (H) and Sassuolo (A). Inter want to defend the Scudetto with wins against Bologna (A), Udine (A), Empoli (H), Cagliari (A) and Sampdoria (H).
France: PSG successfully strike back
In France, PSG already restored the balance of power last weekend: After Lille last year, the capital club is now once again at the top. Symbolic of a season full of ups and downs, Paris bagged their tenth French championship with a 1-1 draw against Lens. With four matchdays to go, the lead over Marseille is 13 points.
Netherlands: Schmidt’s farewell title one away
In the Netherlands, everything is currently in favour of Ajax (75 points), who could be celebrating on the penultimate matchday given their four-point lead over PSV Eindhoven (71). PSV coach Roger Schmidt, who will leave the club for Benfica Lisbon in the summer, recently snatched the cup from Ajax, but they need help to win the championship.
Austria: Salzburg’s dominance continues
In Austria, meanwhile, things are getting as boring as they are in the Bundesliga: RB Salzburg won the national championship for the ninth time in a row (!) last Sunday – their 16th title overall. Before the celebrations could begin, Austria Wien were swept out of the stadium with 5:0.
Switzerland: Breitenreiter will be allowed to crown himself
The situation is different in Switzerland: Between 2010 and 2017, only Basel won the championship, followed by four titles of Young Boys Bern. Now, however, FC Zurich (last at the top in 2009) are about to be crowned. Coach André Breitenreiter’s team (in charge since last summer) is 13 points ahead of Basel with five matchdays to go, and even 19 points ahead of defending champion Bern. FCZ can make their championship perfect in the away game in Basel on Sunday (4.30 p.m.) of all places.
Portugal: Porto have their sights firmly set on the double
In Portugal, FC Porto are highly likely to reclaim the crown from Sporting Lisbon: last year’s champions are already six points behind Porto, so a lot would have to go wrong for the current leaders not to end up on top as well. Porto face Vizela (H), Benfica (A) and Estoril Praia (H) in the final sprint, before they could even celebrate the double in the cup final against Tondela (22 May).
Turkey: Trabzonspor break Istanbul series
Turkey is in for a changing of the guard: for the first time since 2009, the champion will not come from Istanbul – since the 2009/10 season, Galatasaray have been top five times, Besiktas three times, Fenerbahce twice and Basaksehir once. But now it is the turn of Trabzonspor from the Black Sea coast, who with an eleven-point lead and four games to go, can clinch the title under their own steam in their home game against Antalyaspor on Saturday (7.30pm).
