Poland’s Swiatek wins final in Stuttgart

Stuttgart – With her fourth title in a row, Poland’s world number one Iga Swiatek has underlined her exceptional position on the tennis tour.

The 20-year-old clearly won the final of the most important German women’s tournament 6:2, 6:2 against the Belarusian world number four Aryna Sabalenka. It was the fourth tournament win in a row for the Pole after Doha, Indian Wells and Miami.

In front of about 4300 spectators in the not quite sold-out hall, Swiatek showed a strong performance in the final on her tournament debut. After 1:24 hours, she had also won her 23rd match in a row on the WTA Tour.

Swiatek received prize money of 93 823 euros and a sports car for her final success. For the 23-year-old Sabalenka, as in the previous year, the final ended in disappointment. In 2021, she had been defeated by the now retired Australian world number one Ashleigh Barty.

Of the six German women in the main draw of the 611,210 euro clay-court tournament, Laura Siegemund from Swabia was the most successful, reaching the quarter-finals. Three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber was eliminated in the first round.
