Klopp’s wishes are heard: Premier League reintroduces five changes

First and foremost Jürgen Klopp had complained that he is only allowed to change three times in the Premier League. That will change for the new season.

The clubs in England’s top professional division have jointly decided to adopt this rule from the 2022/23 season. In the recent past, the majority had also decided against it. From next season onwards, substitutions will be allowed five times in total, at three times during the match – and also at half-time.

Klopp and Thomas Tuchel in particular had repeatedly called for the two additional options – Sean Dyche, for example, took a contrary view – but now other coaches have also spoken out. Southampton’s Ralph Hasenhüttl is not surprised and believes that his Saints will particularly benefit from it “because we play so intensively”. Jesse Marsch (Leeds) also thinks the change can only do the games good.

David Moyes of West Ham had been rather against five changes in the past, but because of the only three possible stoppages of play per team he could now accept it.

Other decisions included setting the summer transfer window from 10 June to 1 September, and players and staff of Premier League clubs will only have to be tested regularly for COVID-19 if they are symptomatic.
