Due to Ukraine war: GR Racing skips 1,000 miles of Sebring

The GR Racing team will not compete in the WEC opener at Sebring due to the war in Ukraine – Michael Wainwright currently with other issues

One less for Sebring: GR Racing will not take part in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) opener. The Porsche team consisting of drivers Michael Wainwright, Ben Barker and Riccardo Pera will skip the season opener

The reason is the war in Ukraine. Michael “Mike” Wainwright is COO at the Dutch commodities company Trafigura, which has a full office in Ukraine. The priority now is first to get the employees to safety.

“For me, it was the wrong decision to travel to the USA for the first race while people from the company found themselves in dangerous and unpredictable situations,” the team owner and driver told Daily Sportscar.

“I feel obliged to provide as much help and support as I can here from Europe, rather than create further barriers in the form of delays due to time zone shifts. I’m sorry for everyone who wanted to be there. We will be back in Spa.”

Trafigura, in addition to rescuing employees from Ukraine, must also reconsider a stake in Russian oil producer Vostok Oil. The company is not active in Russia itself.
