Olympic champion Zverev reaches quarter-finals in Montpellier

Montpellier – Eleven days after his round of 16 exit at the Australian Open, Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev has celebrated another victory on the ATP Tour.

The 24-year-old won his round of 16 match against American Mackenzie McDonald 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) at the ATP tournament in Montpellier. After 1:19 hours, the favourite had reached the next round. In the quarter-finals, Zverev, the number 1 seed, will meet Frenchman Adrian Mannarino. The hard court tournament in the south of France is endowed with 490 990 euros.

Zverev has good memories of Montpellier: the Hamburg player won there five years ago in both the singles and doubles with his brother Mischa. At the Australian Open, he had already failed in the round of 16 against Canadian Denis Shapovalov. “I had a lot of pressure in Australia. Everybody kept saying that I can be the world number one and I was disappointed with my performance,” said the Olympic champion, who will compete in Montpellier in the singles and also in the doubles together with Brazilian Marcelo Melo.
