WEC 2022: WRT confirms new signing Sean Gelael and second car

LMP2 runner-up from 2021 docks with championship-winning team: Sean Gelael moves from Jota to WRT, where they will field a second Oreca 07 on a full-time basis in 2022

WRT, the reigning champion team in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) LMP2 class, is increasing its line-up from one to two cars for the 2022 season. The Belgian racing team will field two Oreca-Gibson 07s in the new season, with the second running under the Realteam by WRT name. The reason for this is a cooperation with Realteam Racing from Switzerland.

Sean Gelael has been confirmed as the first driver for the 31 WRT Oreca. The 2021 LMP2 vice-champion’s move from Jota to WRT is thus in the bag. “I hope I can contribute to [WRT] taking the title again this year. The title is also my goal after losing so narrowly to WRT last year,” Gelael said.

And the first driver for the second WRT Oreca (car number 41) has also been decided. It is Rui Andrade from Angola. He joins WRT from G-Drive. In the 2021 season, his rookie season in the LMP2 car, he took the title in the Pro-Am class of the European Le Mans Series (ELMS).

Commenting on his team and race series change, Andrade said, “I am very excited to be racing the full 2022 WEC season for Realteam by WRT. To move up to the WEC is a dream come true for me. I am proud to represent my home country of Angola at the highest level of endurance racing.”

Who will take the wheel of the two WRT Oreca cars alongside Gelael and Andrade in 2022 has not yet been announced.
