UEFA Five-Year Ranking: Bundesliga worst of top four nations

The German clubs have not been able to collect too many points in the UEFA Five-Year Ranking But that is no cause for concern

On the last matchday of the Champions League preliminary round, there were only 3.285 points – the worst result of the “Big Four” (England 4.142, Spain 3.857, Italy 3.286)

At the end of the group stage, not only the results count, bonus points are also awarded. Bayern, for example, collected four extra points for reaching the round of 16, while more clubs from England, Spain and Italy advanced to the knockout rounds in comparison. In addition, Wolfsburg and Union Berlin can no longer collect points after their elimination – in Italy, just a whisker ahead of Germany, that only affects AC Milan.

CL Round of 16: draw, teams, TV – and a new rule

In contrast to the Champions League, there is still an intermediate round in the Europa League and the Conference League. German representatives could still collect points here.

Europa League draw: teams, mode, dates

The Netherlands, who are seventh in the table, have already picked up more points than leaders England. Scotland and Russia have swapped places in ninth and tenth respectively.

No need to panic – also because of the 2017/18 season

The five-year ranking alone decides how many European Cup participants an association is allowed to field in the various competitions. And in the end, it doesn’t matter to the top nations whether they are first or fourth – they just want to avoid fifth place as much as possible. While the top four are each allowed to field four direct Champions League and three Europa League participants, the fifth-placed team is “only” entitled to six places: two in the CL group stage, one in the CL qualifiers, three in the Europa League.

The gap to the unloved fifth place is still enough for Germany not to panic – especially since a particularly bad result (2017/18 season, 9.857 points) will be dropped in the coming season.

The UEFA five-year ranking, as of 10/12 (decisive for the distribution of the 2023/24 starting places)
