Wolfsburg have also won their third competitive match under Florian Kohfeldt. But in the 1:0 win against Augsburg the coach could probably only be satisfied with the first half.
Wolfsburg coach Kohfeldt made two changes compared to the important 2:1 home win in the Champions League against RB Salzburg, the second win in the second game for the football coach: Bornauw and Steffen started for Lacroix (red suspension) and Vranckx (adductor problems). His opposite number Markus Weinzierl sent the same eleven onto the field that had won 4:1 against Stuttgart. After five games in a row without a win, Augsburg had once again experienced a sense of achievement.
Nmecha scores again
“We are the clear underdogs, but we are going to Wolfsburg to surprise them,” said Weinzierl before the encounter. Both teams had recently celebrated successes, so they had self-confidence in their luggage. However, only the Wolves showed that at first, starting the game in a very dominant manner and already leading after 14 minutes: Otavio found Lukas Nmecha, who scored with his head, Gikiewicz’s save came too late. The attacker scored in his third competitive match in a row, i.e. in all games under Kohfeldt so far.
Wolfsburg were clearly the better team in the first half, Otavio just missed the 2:0 (22.). Augsburg did pinprick the ball forward, but Maier (25.) and Caligiuri (34., 36.) were not really dangerous. The hosts were much more dangerous, Arnold forced Gikiewicz to do a good deed with a free kick and Bornauw headed just past on the right (both 31.). In the end, it went into the dressing rooms with a fully deserved 1:0 for Wolfsburg.
Wolfsburg too passive – FCA without ideas
After the break it was a different picture, Augsburg did more now, Wolfsburg was very passive. In the 52nd minute, FCA had a great chance to equalise, but Zeqiri failed to beat Casteels. FCA continued to be brave without creating a lot of chances. Hahn scored the supposed equaliser, but he was offside (74.). The will of FCA was there, only the ideas in the offensive were missing. The Wolves did not do more than absolutely necessary after the break, the substitute Felix Nmecha missed the decision (82nd). But even so, it was enough for the third win in the third game under Kohfeldt for the hosts, who were weak after the change of ends. However, the coach was not satisfied with the second half.
Wolfsburg face Bielefeld away after the international break on 20 November, Augsburg host Bayern the day before at 20.30.
