Hamburger SV still can’t catch up with the top. Despite taking the lead in Karlsruhe, the Red Shirts were held to a draw for the eighth time this season.
After just twelve matchdays, Karlsruhe, where Lorenz replaced Cueto (bench) after the 2:4 against Paderborn, and HSV, where Kinsombi started instead of Alidou (bench) compared to the1:1 against Kiel, were both only on four wins. The motivation for improvement was noticeable for both teams at Wildpark.
Early on, a lively exchange of blows developed in which both teams gave little to each other in alternating phases of dominance. Reis had the first good chance for the visitors (5th), Lorenz (6th) and Gordon (8th) missed on the other side. Hamburg finally took the lead, Gersbeck was helpless against Kittel’s great shot (14th) – but Hofmann answered in time with a well-placed header (18th).

Jatta missed the empty goal from an acute angle after a Gersbeck slip (23.) – in minutes in which HSV were pressing. Shortly before the break, however, it was KSC’s turn again, but they too missed the second goal: Heyer and Schonlau threw themselves successfully into the shots of Wanitzek (43.) and Hofmann (45.).
After the change of ends, it was the Walter eleven’s turn again, for the first time a team was noticeably better. Heyer and Glatzel directly missed a double chance (46.) – and after a few minutes Karlsruhe caught up again. Wanitzek did not miss half a metre from the second row (54.).
Kittel misses the big chance – Wanitzek unlucky
In the meantime, the action became a bit more tense and niggly, there was less action in front of the goals than in the first period. But Kittel promptly had a great chance when he couldn’t get a volley on goal at the second post (64th).
After Lorenz fell on his shoulder and various other changes, it was again Karlsruhe who pressed for the second goal towards the end – and how: Schleusener knocked on (76th), on the counterattack Wanitzek – Johansson was still on the ball – hit the post shortly afterwards (80th). The goalkeeper also saved Gondorf’s volley (83rd), on the opposite side Kittel shot too harmlessly (90.+1).
KSC is in demand after the international break in Ingolstadt (21 November). Hamburg, who also remain on a four-game winning streak and have just drawn again, host Jahn Regensburg the day before.
