Pichler: “There was a lot of hard work and sweat involved”

Seventh game against Dynamo Dresden, seventh win: Holstein Kiel celebrates first treble under coach Marcel Rapp and climbs out of the cellar.

Dresden came at the right time, KSV breathes a sigh of relief. The record against the Saxons remained spotless with the seventh win in the seventh second league meeting, after the longer dry spell with one defeat and three draws from the last four games, the Kielers have turned the tables. In the tableau, this means a jump from the relegation spot past Dynamo to 13th place.

The relief was palpable after the match. Representing the entire team, Hauke Wahl said: “We knew it was a very important game for us and we really wanted to win it.” The captain praised Holstein’s will to win, for which they were rewarded. Johannes van den Bergh also spoke of a “deserved victory”, as did equaliser Benedikt Pichler: “It was really strong how we worked our way back after the break. There was a lot of hard work and sweat, which is why we deserved it.

Pichler steps into the breach for Mühling – Reese fantastic

Pichler had taken responsibility for the superior Störche from the spot after falling behind – Dresden’s Heinz Mörschel sank the ball after Simon Lorenz’s deflection was too short (32nd) – and scored the equaliser (65th) after the actually infallible Alexander Mühling had missed his first penalty kick in the Holstein dress after 15 successful attempts in the last action before going into the dressing room and had failed to score against Dynamo keeper Kevin Broll (45.+1).

“We set out to turn the game around, and we did,” said van den Bergh, giving an insight into the hosts’ feelings at the break, when they struck twice after Pichler’s equaliser: Joker Fabian Reese, who had brought fresh momentum, scored a technically impressive direct shot after an assist from Finn Porath and thus turned the tables in Kiel’s favour within 96 seconds.
