Rose on Reyna: “We hope he will still be an issue this year”

Borussia Dortmund will have to do without US youngster Giovanni Reyna for even longer. BVB coach Marco Rose announced on Friday ahead of the match against RB Leipzig that the attacking player’s muscle injury has proved “a bit more difficult”. It was not yet foreseeable when Reyna would be able to rejoin team training.

One goal against Frankfurt, one goal against Hoffenheim – the season started well for Giovanni Reyna. But then the US international in the service of Borussia Dortmund suffered an injury during the international trip at the beginning of September and has had to sit out ever since. And this unsatisfactory state of affairs will continue for a while, as BVB coach Marco Rose admitted on Friday.

“It’s slowly getting better, but then the injury has proved a bit more difficult,” said the 45-year-old, for whom Reyna was set at the start of the season. Reyna’s muscle injury had involved a “slight tendon involvement” and the nerves had also caused slight problems with “certain rehab processes”, which is why they had to take a step back. “Now we hope that ground will come in there and we will be able to take steps forward little by little,” added Rose, who did not want to make any prediction about when he would return: “It is not yet foreseeable when Gio will be back in team training. But we hope he will be an issue this year. “

BVB hospital well-staffed

In addition to Reyna, BVB will also have to do without numerous other players for the Bundesliga match at RB Leipzig on Saturday. Especially as Marius Wolf also signed off sick with a muscle injury after the Champions League match against Ajax Amsterdam (1:3) last Wednesday. Short-term returnees are not to be expected. Only after the upcoming international break is it to be expected that one or the other currently injured BVB professional – such as Raphael Guerreiro, Nico Schulz and Mahmoud Dahoud – will report back for training and matches.

Rose on Pongracic: “I will point out to him that sometimes silence is golden “

But that will certainly not include striker Erling Haaland, who BVB may miss until the end of the year – something Dortmund’s centre-back Marin Pongracic, among others, had recently spilled the beans about. Rose therefore gave the player on loan from Wolfsburg, who is facing a fine, some advice on Friday: “I haven’t seen him yet, but of course I’ve noticed. I will point out to him that sometimes silence is golden,” said the BVB coach, who previously worked with Pongracic at RB Salzburg.
