Borussia Dortmund’s juniors missed out on a win against Sporting Lisbon in their second Youth League match. The decisive factor was primarily a lack of efficiency.
After the opening win at Besiktas, BVB struggled a bit at the beginning of the match, Sporting owned the first quarter of an hour. After that, however, Dortmund found their way into a more orderly combination game and won the ball earlier. By far the best opportunity of a rather uneventful first half was missed negligently by BVB attacker Fink (23rd).
At the start of the second half, Skoglund on one side (46th) and Fink again on the other side (50th) both had presentable opportunities, after which the teams increased the tempo at least slightly, without one of the opponents gaining a clear advantage. Dortmund again had the better chances through Bamba (67.), Mengot (85.), and Fink (90.+3), but BVB keeper Kirsch was also forced into two flying saves against Travassos (74.) and Mateus Fernandes (79.).
The draw was not undeserved, but BVB was much closer to the decisive goal. In the Group C table, the Westphalians are now level on points with Ajax Amsterdam, who beat Besiktas 3:1 in the parallel match. The direct clash with the Dutch side will take place on 19 October in Amsterdam.
