Ronaldo joining Juventus could trigger a domino effect which would bring Paulo Dybala to Liverpool.
Paulo Dybala to Liverpool
Today’s rumor mill has spread the news of Liverpool approaching Juventus regarding the availability of their star forward Paulo Dybala. The Italian club has rejected all offers for their prized asset in recent years, but with Ronaldo’s move to the Apennine Peninsula looking more likely by the minute, the Old Lady might be willing to part ways with the Argentinian, in order to cover the costs of Ronaldo’s acquisition.
Liverpool was injected with a hefty financial boost after reaching the Champions League final last season (not to mention the Mohamed Salah jersey sales and sold out tickets) and still has some money left over from the Philippe Coutinho sale. Dybala would cost over €100 million, which is a number The Reds can afford.
Does a potential move make sense for Juventus?
Financially, it does. Cristiano Ronaldo will cost a fortune and even though the Old Lady conducts savvy football business, it might need to sell in order to comply with Financial Fair Play rules. Dybala’s departure would cover Ronaldo’s arrival without the need to offload anybody else.
Practically, it doesn’t. With Ronaldo on one side and Dybala on the other, Juventus becomes deadly. It’s the closest to having Ronaldo and Messi on the same pitch. The combination of the two turns Juventus into Champions League favourites. Therefore, from a purely competitive point of view, letting Dybala go doesn’t make sense, since there’s no one in Juventus’ squad who can replace him. The only other possibility is to play Ronaldo on the right side, with Higuain in the middle and Mandzukic on the left, which is highly unlikely.
Does a potential move make sense for Liverpool?
Not really. Paulo Dybala plays in the same exact position as Mohamed Salah. The only way it could make sense is if Dybala would play as an attacking midfielder, taking over Coutinho’s role in the formation. The Reds have been chasing Nabil Fekir, who is a cheaper option and fits the position much better than Dybala does. Jurgen Klopp won’t be able to release Dybala’s maximum potential, just because his tactics won’t allow it. Spending so much money on a player like that wouldn’t make much sense.
