When Sergio Ramos tangled with Mo Salah to end the Egyptian’s Champions League dreams, there were concerns that his World Cup dream could be over at the same time. Salah has enjoyed a phenomenal season where he has broken goal-scoring records and picked up individual trophies galore. Even Ronaldo has recently come out to say that Mo could win the Ballon d’Or!
Salah trains with rest of Egypt squad
Salah has been doing everything within his power to ensure that he is able to play in the World Cup’s opening match against Uruguay tomorrow but there was good news yesterday as he returned to training for the first time. Previous to this, he had been training away from the squad, working on specific strengthening exercises to recover from his shoulder injury.
Still uncertain whether he will be fit to start against Uruguay
However, it is still unclear whether he will be fit enough to play tomorrow. If there is a chance that he is fit enough, they will want to call on the services of their star man but they may consider it too risky. The Egypt manager may decide to concentrate on the two games against Russia and Saudi Arabia, knowing that wins against both of these teams should see Egypt through to the next stage of the competition. A fully fit Salah is probably their best chance of achieving two good results in those games, so this could sway the decision.
The Egypt FA’s managing director said ‘He is gradually getting better. However, I cannot confirm today that he will play in the first match.’ It sounds like Salah must be very close to being considered fit to start, so this will only add to the excitement in the build up to Egypt’s first appearance at the World Cup Finals since 1990. The nation will be desperately hoping that Salah will be fit and ready to fly against Uruguay.
Can Mo Salah fire Egypt into Round 16 of the Russia World Cup? We will soon find out!
