Real Madrid followed FC Barcelona into the final of the Supercopa. The Royal made it against RCD Mallorca for a long time exciting, but in the end there was a 3:0 victory on the scoreboard.
In the second semi-final of the Spanish Supercup, FC Barcelona were looking for their final opponent. The Catalans had won 2-0 in Bilbao in the first semi-final.
After the 5-0 win in the Copa del Rey against fourth-tier side CD Minera, in which some of the regular players were rested, coach Carlo Ancelotti made a number of changes. Among others, top stars such as Bellingham, Vinicius Jr. and Mbappé were back in the starting lineup.
Real don’t take their chances
The Royal team took control of the game at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) right from the start and looked for a way forward. With its fast offensive players, Real repeatedly posed problems for the underdog. This led to chances early on, which Vazquez (3rd) and Mbappé (8th) were unable to convert into goals.
In the 20th minute, Mallorca also appeared dangerously in front of goal for the first time, when Muriqi headed wide after a cross from Darder. The scene changed little in the game. The Madrilenians continued to dominate, but often operated inaccurately in the final third. Apart from a shot from Rodrygo (41), there were no real chances. The teams went in at half-time without scoring.
The third attempt is on target
After the break, Mallorca registered in the person of Dani Rodriguez, but his shot from the back line flew over (47′). Then the Madrilenians took control of the game again. Real did not pose a goal threat for almost a quarter of an hour – until the 63rd minute: in that minute, Rodrygo headed against the post, Mbappé failed to beat Greif, before Bellingham put the third attempt into the net to make it 1-0.
Even after the opening goal, the Madrilenians had everything under control. Mallorca tried hard, but hardly developed any power. Therefore, keeper Courtois had to intervene as little as possible. Meanwhile, the favorites’ offensive line pushed for the 2-0 lead. Vinicius Jr. (78′), Rodrygo (79′) and Mbappé (80′) had good chances to decide the game, but failed to take them.
An own goal makes everything clear
It remained exciting until the end, but this should not change the result. The Madrilenians kept the outsider well away from their own goal – and made everything clear in injury time: Valjent wanted to clear a pass from Brahim Diaz, but unfortunately grated the ball into his own goal – and thus made the 0:2 (90. + 2). Rodrygo made it 3-0 shortly afterwards from close range.
The Whites will now face FC Barcelona in the Supercopa final on Sunday, in what will be the Clasico.
