MLS adventure: Schwarz convinces Choupo-Moting to move to New York

After half a year without a new club, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is starting a new adventure. The former Munich player is moving across the pond – to the Big Apple, where Sandro Schwarz is waiting for him.

Out of necessity, Bayern Munich signed Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in the fall of 2020 as a back-up for Robert Lewandowski. The Cameroonian international striker (73 appearances, 20 goals) took on his role whenever needed and was well-liked in the team. He left Munich quietly in the summer of 2024.

Choupo-Moting played a total of 122 competitive matches for the German record champions, scoring 38 goals. The 35-year-old’s next move was likely to be well considered, which is why he decided against a hasty decision last summer.

Now, however, Choupo-Moting’s new club has been decided: the Hamburg native is moving to the US professional league MLS. The attacker has signed a two-year contract with the New York Red Bulls. This also includes the option for an additional season.

“We are delighted to have a player of Maxim’s caliber in our squad from now on,” said sporting director Jochen Schneider: ‘Maxim is a great player, a winner and his experience in Europe’s top leagues will be of great importance to our club in 2025 and beyond.’

Choupo-Moting continues to speak German with his new coach at the third foreign station of his career (after Stoke City and Paris Saint-Germain): Sandro Schwarz has been in charge in the Big Apple since mid-December 2023 – and convinced his new goal scorer to join the Red Bulls.

“Maxim is a strong striker who will bring a lot of experience and leadership qualities to our club,” Schwarz is convinced: ‘He will be a great addition to our squad.’
