The final Nations League game in Hungary saw captain Joshua Kimmich. He had to be substituted injured during the landslide victory against Bosnia-Herzegovina – but then gave the all-clear himself.
However, there was a fly in the ointment from the German point of view. In the 71st minute, captain Joshua Kimmich, who also helped out offensively due to a lack of defensive work, twisted his ankle in the opposing penalty area. The right-back rolled around on the grass with a face contorted in pain.
Team doctor Dr. Jochen Hahne and physiotherapist Bernd Schosser rushed to his aid immediately. After a brief examination of Kimmich, they immediately requested a change. National coach Julian Nagelsmann reacted and brought Frankfurt’s central defender Robin Koch on for the injured Kimmich.
“If it hadn’t been 6-0, I wouldn’t have been out”
Afterwards, Nagelsmann said on RTL that there had been “no injuries”. But then he put it into perspective: “Josh is a bit troubled with the capsule, hopefully it’s nothing dramatic.” But Nagelsmann is optimistic, which is why he added: “According to the doc, he was a bit lucky, thank God.”
It is still unclear whether Kimmich will be fit to play in the final international with the national team next Tuesday when they travel to Budapest in Hungary. Kimmich himself explained: “It was a precaution. If the score hadn’t been 6-0, I wouldn’t have left the pitch. I want to play in Hungary again.”
In any case, Kimmich reached three DFB milestones with his appearance in Freiburg – among other things, the 2017 Confederations Cup winner overtook legends Sepp Maier and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (both 95) with his 96th international appearance and drew level with Berti Vogts.
Bayern will also be keeping a close eye on the 29-year-old’s condition and the DFB’s approach. After the international break, Munich will face Augsburg (November 22), Paris (November 26) in the Champions League and Dortmund (November 30) in the Bundesliga classic.
