Schweinsteiger, Vogts, Werner: Kimmich faces three DFB milestones

The German national team is looking to cap a successful year of international matches in 2024 with the November fixtures. Captain Joshua Kimmich faces three milestones in Freiburg.

The German national team has set the standard in the 2024 international year. The painful European Championship defeat against Spain is so far the only defeat in the calendar year – and they want to keep it that way if possible.

The DFB team wants to cap the past twelve months in the Nations League duels with Bosnia-Herzegovina in Freiburg on Saturday and Hungary in Budapest next Tuesday.

The first appearance in Breisgau for the new DFB captain Joshua Kimmich, who has left his mark on the calendar year on the pitch in various roles, is likely to be quite special. The 29-year-old faces three milestones against Bosnia-Herzegovina, who will be looking to get revenge for the 2-1 first-leg defeat in Zenica.

Because: If fielded in the sold-out Europa-Park Stadium in Freiburg, Kimmich would play his 17th game in the Nations League – and would thus become the new German record player in this competition. Currently, the FC Bayern playmaker is still tied for first place with Tottenham’s Timo Werner (16 games).

Kohler just ten games away

If Kimmich takes to the field on Saturday, it will be his 96th international appearance. If he does, the 2017 Confederations Cup winner will overtake legends Sepp Maier and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (both 95) and join Berti Vogts in 15th place. Jürgen Kohler will join the top 10 with his 105 appearances.

And the third milestone? Kimmich would be the captain starting for the 13th time. Bayern icon Bastian Schweinsteiger has also led the DFB team out onto the pitch 13 times with the armband on his arm.
