The German top player wants to gain momentum for 2025 after the ATP Finals.
Alexander Zverev has made his decision: the German Tennis Federation (DTB) will compete for the Davis Cup at the final round in Malaga at the end of November without the world number three. “It was a very demanding season in which I had to play through with a knee injury in order to take part in the Olympic Games,” Zverev is quoted in a DTB statement.
He was “forced”, the French Open finalist continued, to “make the difficult decision” to end his tennis year after the ATP Finals (November 10 to 17). He wanted to be “back at 100 percent” for the United Cup at the turn of the year and the Australian Open in January.
Davis Cup: Altmaier replaces Zverev
As the fifth and last player for the final round in southern Spain (November 19 to 24), Davis Cup captain Michael Kohlmann nominated the world number 82 Daniel Altmaier from Kempen after Zverev’s cancellation on Monday. In the battle for the fourth triumph in the traditional national competition, the first for the DTB since 1993, Warsteiner Jan-Lennard Struff (42nd in the ATP ranking) will be the German number one. The squad is completed by Yannick Hanfmann and the world-class doubles Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz.
The DTB team will face Canada in the quarterfinals of the final tournament on November 20. If they advance, they will face either the host nation Spain or the Netherlands in the semi-finals two days later. The final will take place on November 24.
Zverev is competing at the ATP Masters in Paris this week. His season will end with his appearance at the ATP Finals in Turin, where the top eight players of the year compete. “Now I’ll do my best to finish the season well despite problems with my lungs,” said the Hamburg native.
