Clear words from Lewis Hamilton: He ‘doesn’t feel like’ buying another sports car – What the record Formula 1 world champion misses about the current cars
Lewis Hamilton’s private garage is well stocked: the seven-time Formula 1 world champion owns several sports cars, from the Ferrari LaFerrari to the McLaren P1 and the Mercedes-AMG Project One. Last week, Ferrari presented a brand new gem in the form of the F80. And how did Hamilton react?
“To be honest, I haven’t seen the Ferrari yet,” said the Mercedes driver on the sidelines of the USA GP in Austin. “I saw that they are launching something on October 17, so I’ll have to take a look at that.”
Anyone who might have expected Hamilton to whip out his credit card to put his future employer’s new model directly in his garage will be disappointed. The record world champion is not getting too excited!
“The last car I bought was the Project One,” reveals the 39-year-old Formula One driver, who will be driving for Ferrari next year. ‘And to be honest, that’s my last car, I don’t feel much like [buying more].’
“Nowadays, I’m more interested in art. That’s the kind of thing I could afford,” says the Formula 1 driver, who likes to “discover new artists.” He is particularly fond of “dark-skinned artists, for example from Africa.”
Today’s cars “all look the same.”
Nevertheless, Hamilton cannot completely lose his passion for fast cars. “Of course, I keep an eye on cars and what’s new,” the Mercedes driver smiles. But: “Most cars today all look the same. Something is missing.”
That’s why the record world champion now prefers to be inspired by older cars. “If I were to buy a car again, it would probably be a classic for the sound and the emotions,” says the Briton.
“There aren’t many brands left today that build a car that can convey those emotions,” says Hamilton, who hasn’t presented himself as a classic ‘car poser’ on Instagram for quite some time. ‘It’s not the same, but maybe I’m just getting old.’
