On December 18, the first winner of the new FIFA Intercontinental Cup will be crowned in Doha, Qatar. Two years after the final of the 2022 World Cup, Champions League winners Real Madrid will compete for the trophy in the final.
Who will be Real’s opponent will be decided in a previous knockout tournament. The continental champions from Asia, Oceania, Africa and North and South America will compete against each other. The first of these games will be played this Sunday, as FIFA announced. Al-Ain will face Auckland City.
In recent years, the Champions League winner has traditionally competed in the semi-finals of the Club World Cup, but this format will be replaced by an even bigger tournament with 32 teams from 2025. The first edition of this new Club World Cup will take place next summer in the United States.
