German tennis star overtakes Djokovic

Despite missing out on his dream of winning his first Grand Slam title once again, Alexander Zverev climbs up the world rankings. He hasn’t been this good for a long time

Alexander Zverev climbs to second place in the tennis world rankings after reaching the quarter-finals at the US Open, returning to the best position of his career. The 27-year-old moved past Carlos Alcaraz from Spain and Novak Djokovic from Serbia, who had both failed to reach the Grand Slam tournament in New York earlier.

Zverev was last ranked second two years ago, after which he dropped to 27th place due to his serious ankle injury at the French Open. In addition to winning a Grand Slam title, Zverev’s declared goal is to reach the top of the world rankings. At 7,075 points, he is currently more than 4,000 points behind US Open winner Jannik Sinner from Italy (11,180).

Tatjana Maria is once again the top-ranked German in the women’s singles after losing in the final of the lower-ranked tournament in Guadalajara. She moved up from 99th to 82nd place, passing Laura Siegemund, who is now 97th
