Like Norris & Piastri: Teammates with debut win in the same F1 season

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have claimed their first Formula 1 victory as team-mates in the same season: the last time was more than 20 years ago!

Oscar Piastri’s first Formula 1 victory at the race in Hungary was a very special one: not only was it the Australian’s first, making it historic anyway, but it also provided a statistical specialty.

After Lando Norris had already won his first Grand Prix in Miami, both McLaren drivers have now claimed their debut victory in the same season. The fact that two team-mates have achieved this has not happened so often in history.

In the past 60 years, this has only happened once: in 2001 at BMW-Williams – the year Oscar Piastri was born.

Back then, Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya both won their first Formula 1 race. This was also a statistical curiosity, as both of them also happened to achieve their first successes in the same country.

Montoya won the Italian Grand Prix in Monza for the first time, while Schumacher had previously taken first place in Imola. Although this was officially the San Marino Grand Prix at the time, as Formula 1 fans know, the circuit is of course in Italy – and is now held as the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix.

Two team-mates taking their first victory in the same year had not happened for 40 years. It was only in the early years of Formula 1 that it happened a few times.

It has only happened a total of five times in the 75 years of Formula 1 history – six times if you count 1961, when two drivers won who were not officially team-mates but were nevertheless driving the same car.
