Bayern to test against Grasshoppers on Tuesday: “Not a matter of course”

FC Bayern has arranged another test match at short notice. It will be against Grasshopper Club Zurich on Tuesday – and there may even be a second leg to follow

“We need every game,” declared Vincent Kompany recently – now the new FC Bayern coach has been given another one at short notice: next Tuesday at 11.30 a.m., the Munich club will welcome Grasshopper Club Zurich to the FC Bayern Campus for a clash between the German and Swiss record champions.

Following duels with FC Rottach-Egern (14:1), 1. FC Düren (1:1), Tottenham Hotspur (2:1 and 3:2) and WSG Tirol (3:0), this will be Bayern’s sixth test match this summer, albeit the first after the start of the competitive season, which begins this Friday in the first round of the DFB Cup at second-division promoted SSV Ulm 1846 Fußball. Tickets against Zurich are available for twelve (standing room) or 30 euros (seats).

“We have also discussed a possible return match ”

“It’s not a matter of course that Grasshopper Club Zurich agreed to play at such short notice because they are already in the league,” explained FCB sporting director Christoph Freund. “We’re delighted to be able to play this test match and have also discussed the possibility of a return match in Zurich.” He was not more specific in this regard

Stephan Schwarz, GC’s German sporting director, is looking forward to the “fantastic opportunity to play against one of the best teams in the world and give our players the chance to test themselves individually”. The last time the two clubs met in a friendly match was in 2007, which ended goalless.

Zurich, who have a former Bayern talent in their ranks in Benno Schmitz, can also make good use of the additional match practice. Last season, the traditional club coached by Marco Schällibaum only saved itself in the relegation play-off – known as a barrage in Switzerland – against FC Thun, but then made a false start this season: After four match days, it is bottom of the table with just one point.

Bayern start the new Bundesliga season five days after the test match at VfL Wolfsburg.
