60 million euros and more: Chelsea also convince Pedro Neto

Chelsea FC have not yet reached the end of their summer transfers: It has now become official that Pedro Neto (24) is moving to Stamford Bridge from league rivals Wolverhampton. For a princely transfer fee

As in previous transfer windows, Chelsea FC are also digging deep into their pockets for new arrivals this summer. The Blues unveiled the most expensive this Sunday, with Pedro Neto arriving from league rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers for a hefty €60 million, where he was tied down until June 30, 2027. The sum could even rise to 63 million euros due to bonuses. His new seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge runs until June 30, 2031.

“I am very grateful to be joining this club. I have worked very hard in my career to get to this point,” the Portuguese was quoted as saying in a club statement. “I’m looking forward to stepping onto the pitch in this jersey.

Pedro Neto’s star rose at Braga, who sold him to Lazio Roma for €11 million in the summer of 2019 after a successful loan spell in Italy. The Serie A club saw the lively right-back as a welcome investment, and just one month after signing him permanently, Pedro Neto was transferred to Wolverhampton Wanderers for just under €18 million.

Since then, Pedro Neto has made 135 competitive appearances for Wolves, who traditionally rely on Portuguese players, scoring 14 goals and providing 24 assists. In the 2023/24 season, he scored eleven times (two goals, nine assists) in 20 league appearances.

Pedro Neto was then part of Portugal’s European Championship squad. With the 2016 title winners, he was dramatically eliminated in the quarter-finals on penalties against France. Pedro Neto made three appearances in the tournament (two as a substitute), his assist giving the Portuguese a late 2:1 opening victory over the Czech Republic. Pedro Neto’s CV includes a total of ten senior international appearances (one goal, two assists)

Arsenal, Liverpool, ManCity and Newcastle United are also said to have been interested in signing him this year. However, Chelsea won the bid. At right-back, Pedro Neto will be battling it out with Noni Madueke for a regular place. Meanwhile, Wolves are reportedly working on signing Ajax Amsterdam’s Carlos Forbs as Pedro Neto’s successor
