Strong half-season without consequences: FCA loans Cardona to Espanyol Barcelona

Irvin Cardona has already made a name for himself on loan at Saint-Etienne in the second half of the season and is now set to do the same at Espanyol Barcelona. FC Augsburg are loaning out the attacker again

Irvin Cardona contributed ten goals and three assists to the promotion of AS Saint-Etienne in the last second half of the season, who are also said to have considered signing the attacker. In any case, Cardona will not be able to recommend himself directly in Augsburg in the coming season either – he will go on loan again to La Liga promotion contenders Espanyol Barcelona.

“After the successful six-month loan to Saint-Etienne, where Irvin played a key role in the club’s promotion, he has returned to FCA with a lot of self-confidence,” says FCA sporting director Marinko Jurendic.

From the point of view of the Swiss and those responsible, however, “it became clear during the course of the preparation that the prospect of playing time at FCA will continue to be slim.” The new loan now offers “a very good opportunity to get regular playing time with a club in a top league. “

Transfer to Barcelona “exactly the right move “

For the 27-year-old attacker, who can play both on the wings and in the center of the attack, this continues an unsatisfactory time in the Fugger city. Cardona moved to Augsburg from Brest in January 2023, for whom he has only appeared in 13 competitive matches since then and scored one goal.

For Cardona himself, whose contract with the Bundesliga club is still valid until June 2027, the move to Barcelona is “exactly the right step at this point in my career”. In the Catalonian capital, he wants to build on his “successful time” at Saint-Etienne – and possibly preserve his chances of a late breakthrough in Germany.
