After leaving Dortmund on a free transfer, Mats Hummels (35) is still looking for a club. Italian club FC Bologna are showing great interest in the central defender
Almost four weeks after the official end of his contract at Dortmund, Mats Hummels’ future remains unclear. The defender, who is currently without a club, is keeping fit on his own – for FC Bologna?
As Claudio Fenucci, managing director of last year’s Serie A fifth-placed side, explained on Friday, the 78-time Germany international “has been told about the project. We are waiting for an answer from Hummels and hope it arrives soon.” Fenucci is also convinced that the former Dortmund player “can help the team not only on the pitch. “
King class with Bologna?
This “project” that the 63-year-old is talking about will include Champions League soccer for the first time in 60 years next season. Under head coach Thiago Motta, who is now under contract with Juventus, the Rossoblu caused a sensation last season and qualified directly for the top flight.
It could therefore be a tempting destination for Hummels, who has played 90 times in the Champions League in his career to date, but has never played for a foreign club. According to Fenucci, the veteran has “taken a few days to think about it carefully”.
Bologna must prepare for Calafiori’s departure
Independent of the possible Hummels transfer, the competition in Bologna’s central defense is likely to be reignited soon. Riccardo Calafiori, who drew attention to himself with strong performances for Italy at the European Championship, is on the verge of a move to Arsenal FC. Although the left-footed Italian is not necessarily the same as the German, the overall package – possibly soon for Hummels too – is still very attractive
