Philadelphia Union are playing a subterranean season at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, but made global headlines on Thursday night (CEST): With the substitution of Cavan Sullivan in the home game against New England Revolution, the franchise led by sporting director Ernst Tanner and left-back Kai Wagner made the youngest debut in the history of the league.
Cavan Sullivan made his professional debut in the 85th minute at the age of 14 years and 293 days, replacing the legendary Freddy Adu, who was 13 days older when he made his debut for DC United in 2004 (and ended a professional career in 2021 that could not keep up with the early promise). It was Sullivan’s penultimate chance to take the record from him.
Probetraining at BVB, future at ManCity
The midfielder, who was born in Philadelphia on September 28, 2009, only signed a professional contract until 2028 in May – the fifth-youngest player in MLS history. “Having the record is very cool. I’m sure there will be younger players to come, but maybe I can hold it for a while,” explained Sullivan, who completed a trial with Borussia Dortmund in 2022.
The next steps in the teenager’s career already seem to have been decided. According to reports, Manchester City have already secured his services, even if this is not yet officially possible due to his age. “When I’m 18, I hope to be at Man City’s first-team level,” Sullivan himself said when signing his contract.

Because he has a German mother, Sullivan could one day play for Germany. However, he has worn the US jersey so far: in 2023, he led the U15s to their first CONCACAF Championship title for teams from North/Central America and the Caribbean as the youngest member of the squad, scoring four goals.
