After crash in Assen: Surgery for Rins kills two birds with one stone

Alex Rins escaped serious injury but will still undergo surgery after his crash in Assen – which will also repair the consequences of an earlier operation

Alex Rins will undergo surgery this Monday following his crash in the MotoGP race in Assen. The Yamaha rider suffered two small, non-displaced fractures to his right wrist, which will be treated at the Clinica Ruben Internacional in Madrid. A small tear in his left leg does not require surgery

Rins traveled directly from Amsterdam to Madrid on Sunday evening to see the doctors who operated on him for the second time last year for the serious injury he sustained at last year’s Italian Grand Prix, which put him out of action for several races.

The Spaniard crashed heavily on Saturday in Mugello on June 9th last year. After a few days in Italy, where he underwent an initial operation, he traveled to Spain, where he underwent a second operation on June 22.

As a result of this injury, Rins still has plates and pins in his right leg. Monday’s operation will involve cleaning out that area and removing a pin that causes him to limp because it slightly pinches a muscle in his foot, causing pain every time he steps on it.

Whether Rins will be out for the German Grand Prix, which starts on Friday at the Sachsenring, is unclear at this stage. The track is left-handed, which would help him to rest his right hand and leg.

Whether the Spaniard will be able to participate in Germany can only be assessed after the operation and depends on the doctors’ judgment. As there are less than ten days between the crash in Assen and the Sachsenring, Yamaha would not be obliged to present a replacement rider should Rins have to take a break.
